Even though all my siblings are awesome, our family awesomeness started long before any of us were born.
This past week was my Grandpa Jed's birthday, and I thought I would take advantage of this opportunity, since I was the only guest, and I rarely get to talk to them alone.
While sitting at dinner I asked them how they met. I thought I knew a lot about my Grandparents and their lives but I guess this was a question I never really asked. As I already knew...my Grandpa (Jed) is 10 years older than my grandma (Shirley), and they got married when she was nineteen... I think. I remember her telling me she was really young. Jed had just gotten back from the War and was going to Law school. Little did I know that Jed was actually on a date with Shirley's best friend at the time when they met. So after a few encounters with each other, thanks to the best friend, Jed decided to ask Shirley on a date. Now here is the best part and the part NO ONE EVER told me. Grandpa has just bought a new suit and was wearing it on their date. They went to some dancing, swinging, restaurant that is long gone by now. With in the dinner, Shirley managed to spill a whole cup of water onto Jed's lap. So basically she felt like a fool and Jed looked like a guy who peed his pants. Grandma seriously thought that Grandpa would never ask her out on a date again, but little did she know that, her hottness (according to Jed) countered her clumsiness.
So as the story goes, after several months of courtship, Greek Pinnings, and lot and lot and lots of studying. Ironically neither were taking chemistry or anatomy classes... Could have fooled me.
About a year later they got married in the winter and they drove cross country for their MONTH long honeymoon. What is that like.
Of course if you know my grandparents, they have a great relationship and the pinch of my grandmothers butt from my grandfather while he went on about how pretty she was, just confirmed it.
So apparently awesomeness runs in the family. I don't know the full story on my dad's parents but I do know that they too met on a double date. Hmm maybe that is what I should be doing.
Well it is a cool story that I never thought to really ask and now I am glad. I love my grandparents and it makes me sad watching them get older. I guess now is crunch time. Gas better go down in that case.
